This movie showcases the life of the young women Songlian. She gets married into the Chen family due to bankruptcy in the family. Her life takes turn for the worst. She marries the older gentlemen and enters the Chen family as the fourth wife.  In the first day of marriage she is treated to lavish luxury. Her husband treats her very well. However she finds her main Yaner to be especially rude. She finds out later that Yan’r wanted to marry Master Chen. But she was not selected, as she was a servant. The first mistress was the age of Chen and had a son who was very old. She had resigned to her fate. The second mistress Zhuoyun warns Songlian to be careful against the third mistress Meishan. Songlian later finds out the red lantern is lit in each of the mistresses house when Chen decides to spend the night with the particular mistress. There was a lot of politics and back stabbing between the three wives, the first wife however had resigned to her fate. Songlian pretends to be pregnant in order to garner favor from Master Chen. The maid and the doctor eventually expose Songlian. Songlian also punishes the maid. The maid kneels down in the snow all night long eventually succumbing to the cold and dying in the hospital. Songlain exposes the illicit relationship between Meishan and a doctor. She finds Meishan dead in the ancient customs chamber for her ill deed. Songlian undergoes tremendous mental trauma and wanders the hallway in a perplexed state. Master Chen marries another women. The movie finishes with Songlian wandering the hallways in a traumatic state. This film served as an expose on the lives of women in ancient China. The customs in China largely favored the dominant men’s actions. The movie is portrayed encompassing the weather elements. It also has a rich cinematography and has effectively portrayed the plight of women in the 1920’s.
