Taoism, also known as Daoism, is a religion of Chinese origin that advocated the significance of living in harmony with each other. The word ‘Tao’ implies the ‘way’ or a ‘principle’ that in Chinese philosophies means something that is a source as well as force behind the existence of everything. Taoism is also referred to as a philosophical and political text that is written by the author Laozi in the 3rd and 4th centuries B.C.E. The religion emphasizes on living in peace with each other and describes the way for people to behave with each other (Wong, Neck and McKenna, p 6). The religion advocated that Tao is something that exists before the establishment of heaven and Earth and is primary source of life from which everything has emerged.

The main teaching of Taoism is to embrace wonder and joy in living and live the entire life gracefully and with style. Taoism is a religion of Eastern origin and it is estimated that the religion has approximately about 225 million followers in the Eastern region. Taoism has a major influence on Chinese culture and is one of the five religions that are officially recognized in China. The Center of Traditional Taoist Studies is a non-profit educational organization that is dedicated to promote in the United States. Thus, the teachings of Taoism are gaining recognition in many parts of the world in addition to the Chinese culture.
