Current society is a consumerist society (Rojek, 2004). Here people partially define their goals in life by the products that they buy and consume. This literally applies to the case of food products. Where other products find some use with time, food products are perishable and this leads to accumulation of wastage in food.
RESEARCH BACKGROUND
AIM
This essay aims to examine the relationship between the price of the food products and the value of food. It would be interesting to analyze whether consumers in present times value foods by the price in the supermarket. Will consumer use up a higher priced food more faster than a low priced one, alternatively would the consumer think rationally before purchasing a higher priced food item. In this context will the product design increase the perceived value of food irrespective of pricing is an interesting research question.
HYPOTHESIS
According to WRAP, in the UK one third of the all food we buy gets thrown away. Most of the food waste is available at a competitive and cheap price and this is the reason that consumer perceive it with a lower value than that of higher priced foods.
STRUCTURE
The research essay attempts to design a product that would increase consumer perception of the value of food. Current literature evidences are analyzed and the main issues of competitive pricing and the reasons behind why consumers might value foods poorly are critically analyzed. The critique that supports the hypothesis is then presented.
