Peter Singer’s article on racial discrimination seeks to find the meaning behind racism. Racism and racial discrimination, according to Singer, has been accepted for long as being something to be looked down upon. Over generations, people might end up forgetting or confusing the reasons why racism was negative in the first place. It is therefore necessary to understand racism based on context to avoid it in its true meaning. Three different cases have been used to understand racial discrimination. The first case study that Singer presents is that of a director who wants to cast a black person in his movie on housing issues in Harlem. The movie is about black people and hence the movie script requires a black male to act in it. According to Singer, this is not racial discrimination. Case 2 is a person selecting potential employees for a cake shop. In case 3, Singer presents the case study of a land owner who based on his previous experiences with black tenants and does not receive rent payments on time and who is averse to letting a black person or family stay at his rental place.
