At many instances during the project, leadership is an essential element to drive the team members towards the objectives. It has to be directive as well as supportive. This model by Hersey and Blanchard gives a better understanding on the behavioural outcomes for the leadership. The situational leadership model implies four components (Hersey and Blanchard, 1977):
– Delegation (low directive and supportive behaviour)
– Support (high supportive and low directive behaviour)
– Coaching (high directive and supportive behaviour)
– Direction (low supportive and high directive behaviour)
Within the organizational environment, a project manager is liable to display coaching followed by directing. The coaching will enable me to drive people towards their commitment and directing will then come into picture where it will guide towards the objectives. The scenario is different at the personal life where the commitment levels differ (Hersey and Blanchard, 1969). Based on the situation, the commitment level has to be decided and behaviour can be exposed accordingly.
Goleman’s model of emotional intelligence
This model is highly motivational and directive to understand oneself in terms of moods, emotions, abilities and regulation based on environment. The model has ignited me at various instances through its components that include self-awareness, persistence, empathy and zeal and motivation (Hiriyappa, 2009). To show my capability, I need to create a self-image that exposes my self-esteem to others. The zeal has to drive others towards my character and this can drive performance in personal and professional lives.
Coming to the organizational environment, the model insisted me to identify the suitability to the environment, level of persistence and emotional capability. Jobs demand high emotional intelligence (EI) and extremely good performance for the productivity. The model finds out the match of criteria with my personality. So far, the project has asserted that I have a better percentage of emotional intelligence compared to my level in the past. However, this is insufficient for me to sustain as a leader. In such a case, I need to work on the following areas:
– Financial productivity
– Productivity based on abilities
– Adaptability to organizational culture
The leader is the forefront to team members and stands as the image of a company’s reputation in the external environment (Morgan, 2014). When I have a control on my mood, I can control others in their activities and drive them towards their passions. As a leader, it is my responsibility to pursue goals with high levels of persistence. The emotional intelligence has to enable better rapport with people on common grounds and develop relationships. Emotions play more roles than intelligence. Emotions happen with maturity of age while intelligence happens with experience and exposure.
