The film was produced in 1933 by the filmmaker Chen Kaige. It is a typical history drama set in the 1920s in China and speaks about how the political actions of the country and how the Japanese invasion had an impact on the main characters of the movie Douzi and Shitou. In the opening scene Douzi’s mother is seen to beg Master Guan to accept her son into the performance school. Guan initially replies negatively because her son was born with an extra finger. His mom cuts of his finger and Guan accepts her son as a student and subsequently names him “Douzi”. This state of ensuring that their children were provided with a better quality of life that what the women could have afforded for herself reflects the dependent state of affairs of women in China at that time. Douzi befriends Shitou a older student. Shitou considers Douzi to be his younger brother. The movies revolve around the relationship between the two. There are many instances where the closeness between the two is elaborated in the movie. Douzi gets sexually harassed by one of the spectators in the crowd after a performance. Shitou feels guilty for not protecting Douzi. In the same day Douzi finds an deserted infant on the street and raises him subsequently. Douzi and Shitou both become famous and adopt the stage names Cheng Dieyi and Duan Xiaolou.
