Is there a practical alternative to the market economy?A market economy is one that any form of production and distribution will be based on market supply and demand. A free price system will be present that will be helpful in fixing the prices and it is based on this free price system and demand and supply that any market movement will take place. Now although people keep changing their mind about the market economy, it will be difficult to be an alternative to market economy. Because market economy is well established with its roots in capitalism and as this is an ingrained structure in how the world businesses trade and work, it might be impossible to accept an alternative structure (Clements & Selvanathan, 1994). As an example of a non-market economy, the economy of China can be considered. Chinese economy is in fact called a hybrid economy.
A practical non-market economy must be one that is able to have a clear administrative authority which would not be dependent on market principles of cost (Nee, 1992). The existing market economy ensures that there is increased efficiency and business organizations achieve this by lowering costs, ensuring their people work harder, finding newer markets to sell, expanding their businesses across the globe and others. Now in this context, different markets around the world are connected and the world works as one global market place. This is the situation many business organizations are used to by now (Podkaminer, 2012). For them to get used to a different form of economical undertaking, it would mean reworking their strategies from the core. So even if alternatives can be envisioned, they might not be practical to implement.
