This essay will be critically analyzing the narrative assigned from The Classic Slave Narratives that is Incidents in theLife of a Slave Girl, written by Harriet Jacobs and edited by Henry Louis Gates.
Harriet Jacobs expresses herself in the voice of her narrator that is Linda Brent. The narration has revealed her reasons to decide for making her personal story of sexual exploitation public, degradation, and enslavement. The story is based on revealing the different brutalities that had been inflicted on slave women. The plot of the narration is about a women who had to spend seven years in the attic of her grandmother for escaping the insatiable lust of her master
Purpose of the Narrative
The main goal and objective behind this slave narratives was for the arousal of sympathy amongst the whites and gaining their support for the movement of anti- slavery that had been led by the abolitionists. As the incidents in the publication had been related to the initial events of the Civil War, it had been considered extremely late for having any political or social impact.
Events included by the Author
Most of the slave narratives had been written by males who expressed their heroic actions and daring escapes. Majority of these slaves went on becoming political leaders or spokes persons. In contradiction to this, the story of Jacob, focusing mainly on her family, was considered as being less important in comparison with the events chosen by her men counterparts.
