Writers write books and articles with a motivation which makes them write in the way they have written the piece. The same writer who writes his or her biography is a different person when he or she writes a different piece, indicating that the same writer can have different zones of moods under which the motivation rises for writing an original piece. Kingston has written a biography which describes the orthodox feeling of Chinese American people and how they have a general but very rigid concept about a female’s right of expressing her desire for sex and actually having sex with a stranger, as seen in the case of Kingston aunt. The writing is clearer, describes the scene thoroughly with each snapshot of the scene when the villagers find out that the child in Kingston’s aunt is not of her husband but of a stranger, and considering it as a sin run towards her house to punish her and throws several stones on the house. The scene described here has a deep rooting with the authors own idea of the formation of a conception about the dominant thought of female about sex outside marriage and her right of expression. However, when the author herself will look into the same writing of her own biography, she will have become a different person, learned new conceptions and unlearned some conceptions.

This contention leads to the inference that the biography once written was when the author was in a specific state of mind, and when writing different texts she was in a different state of mind; thus if we use the biography to judge the other texts of the same author, it may deviate the readers from the exact interpretation which the author is trying to impart. Carroll quotes the following from his research and defends modest actual intentionalism:“Although there are several forms of actual intentionalism, I defend the form known as modest actual intentionalism, which holds that the correct interpretation of an artwork is compatible with the author’s actual intention, which itself must be supported by the artwork.”Carroll has been able to defend modest actual intentionalism against hypothetical intentionalism which is deviating from the author’s actual interpretation. Hypothetical intentionalism is based on the foundations of assumptions of general category and of those which are most common, but modest actual intentionalism aligns well with what the author is trying to transfer the interpretation to the reader. The point made by Carroll fits well with the argument of this essay that the reader can either interpret it hypothetically or actually in a modest way, and in both ways the interpretation the reader will change because the ability to interpret it right also changes and grows or deteriorates with time.
