In this report, Rio Tinto’s business case will be discussed. The report starts with risk classification and identification of risks borne by Rio Tinto under each category. This is followed by a risk matrix for all the mentioned risks. A risk register, treatment schedule and action plan is constructed for the items which have been labeled as ‘high risk’.
About Rio Tinto
Rio Tinto is a British-Australian multinational metals and mining company established in 1873 with a management office in Australia and headquartered in London. The company has undergone a long list of mergers and acquisitions and is now currently a global leader in production of various commodities such as aluminium, copper, iron ore, coal, diamonds, etc. The company also has significant operations in refining iron ore and bauxite (Wikipedia, 2014). Looking into the business nature of Rio Tinto, its major risks can be divided into five categories namely finance risks, operational risks, compliance risks, reputational risk, and strategic risks. It should be noted that a risk coming under any of the above categories can contribute to another risk category as well.
