On my visit to the Art Museum in search of a painting fit for my art appreciation assignment this landscape painting of Willard Leroy Metcalf caught my attention and I was immediately compelled to further explore the painting as the subject-matter of my assignment. By taking it as an assignment project I got a better insight in the art of painting itself along with the styles and the ages the changes that the art of painting underwent with. The painting I chose as my assignment’s subject is a landscape painting of Willard Leroy Metcalf by the name of Winter’s Festival the painting was created in 1913 it’s one of the mature works of Willard Leroy Metcalf, which was a gift to Mrs. Herbert Fleish hacker.
Biography of Painter:
Born in 1858 at Lowell, Massachusetts, Willard Leroy Metcalf got his early education under the apprenticeship of a wood graver and later from a landscape painter Geroge Lorring Brown after attending 2 classes a week at Lowell School the artist got a scholarship in 1876 at the School of Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where he studied the works of German-born painter, Otto Grundman. During his stay short 2 year stay at New-Mexico he illustrated articles for magazines on Zuni Indians, after which he moved on to Europe in 1883 first summer of his in England was spent in sketching the European landscapes after which he moved on to Paris to study at the Academie Julian under Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Gustave Bolanger. During the next two years he made trips to England and Brittany but much of his time was spent in villages of Giverny and Grez-sur-Loing which became a source of inspiration for his most appreciated works Ten-cent Breakfast and Arab Market. Willard’s Arab Market won an honorable mention at The Paris Salon. Metcalf returned to Europe in 1898, and 1890s were the busy times for him for he himself told an interviewer that “Painting, illustrating, teaching- that about sums up my uneventful career… in this profession we haven’t even have time to get into mischief”.
