Femininity of the modern times is obsessed with the adornment of jewellery. There is much bodily transformation possible with clothes, cosmetics etc (Heyes, 2007). Sexual stereotyping of the dresses differentiates man from woman. Feminine fashion since the Victorian era has been focused on some amount of control or discipline on the body. It is seen in the way that corsets and more were worn, even to the extent of causing internal organ displacement. All this was done in the name of getting a slim shape that was appreciated by the society then. The taming of the body is not much different than the concept of marking the victim that Foucault discusses in his ‘The birth of the Prison’. Here the punishment and the disciplining leave a scar. The scar left here is in the form of making the female body more aligned with the feminine perspective of that time (Foucault 1977).
This bodily disciplining is perpetrated by the media. Photos of movie stars whose skin is touched up are shown to portray that skin must be soft and totally hairless, (Bartky). This has exposed women to different types of torture. These are not different from the discipline and the punishment that Foucault discusses. The role of the media in this discussion has been surrounding the perpetration of the power that manipulates the woman.
This training goes on rigidly for years as women are exposed to a daily beauty regime that will include everyday make ups and more. The cosmetic industry also jumps in to impose on woman, giving her a sense of self expression. Bodily manipulations are not just confined to the economy or the society alone, in the modern world, it is seen that individual industries also discipline the women.
