Psychologists believe that in this world three different kinds of memory systems are present and these systems consist of sensory memory, short term and long term memory. These differences were examined closely first time by Atkinson and Shiffrin. The main difference about all these memories is the number, time and quality of information stored in them. Sensory memory holds information for seconds, short term memory holds information for a little time and long term memory is permanent (Thonpson and Madigan, 2007).

Literature review

Primacy and recency effects are present in short term memory and this indicates that there is a strong need for the recall of words. This means that recall of words is required during the presentation, at the beginning of the presentation and at the end of the presentation. Decay theory and inference theory are the main theories given for explaining the reasons why information is loss in short term memory. Decay theory explains that lossing information in human mind is due to the trace decay. Inference theory explains that information is loss in short term memory because of other information that is coming in the way (Morris, 1993). Along with these two reasons there are many other reasons that can be used as a negative impact for the loss of information. Verbal distractions in short term memory can be held accountable for loss of information. In this the degree of interfering is linked with the elements of sound and even the background of the sounds waves that are impacting negatively on the memory. Chunking is an important indicator that is impacting the information stored in short term memory. Chunk is explained as a combination of factors that have a link with one another and are aligned with each other (Tanner, 2008).
