Alternative network design such as a LAN would not be suited for the situation. A LAN could result in issues of security as presented earlier. It would definitely be low cost compared to the WAN. Unlike the WAN, here it does not require much high cost and high end security or technicians for designing it from scratch and this by itself makes the LAN appear as a suitable option. Also compared to a WAN, the problem situations might occur less frequently in the case of the LAN. The fault tolerance controls happen because the LAN network has lesser systems associated with them unlike the WAN. Also the components used are much simpler and these assures that the LAN is much more suitable, however, the aspect of geographic distance still requires the WAN to be the more suitable option (Calvert et al., 1997).Based on cost benefit issues, it can be said one cannot simply use the WAN or the LAN alone. Now as comparison with alternative network designs suggests, the use of the LAN must be allowed in such situations where the coverage that is required is lesser.
For instance, in the case of University designs or in the case of small business office networks or in the case of a home network, simple interconnected offices. Here costs will be controlled because of the minimal design and when it comes to greater geographic distance, and then the WAN could be used as the WAN would be more suitable for connecting across larger distances. Costs are balanced here because LAN is used according to its strengths and WAN would connect the different LAN topologies across. As part of the technical control tasks, it is a basic requirement for the network administrator to work on the design and the planning of the network based on the client requirements, works on setting up the network, maintaining it by means of performance monitoring and expanding the network. Now performance monitoring would take into account a varied set of factors that could affect the network such as its bandwidth services, its speed efficiency, its drag time, and its efficiency during peak load time when maximum users log on, security issues and more.
