Just as Edgar Degas influence her, it could be said she also influenced him. She was more than a student or an imitator. If Cassatt learnt to move towards Impressionist style of art work because of Degas, then it was because of Cassatt that Degas was introduced to American collectors for his art exhibitions and more. It has been argued by many, which Degas was only instrumental in giving her a nudge when she needed it, but it was really that of her own efforts that contributed to her success (Kennicott, 2014).When her education at the academy did not proceed at the speed that she wanted to study, Cassatt decided to opt away of the University. She was particularly impatient when it came to how the instruction at her university was slow in pace, and also there was a patronizing attitude shown by male students and the teachers of the University, which made her decide to do her studying of art and masters of art on her own efforts.

Also she was against how in the University, the female students were not allowed to use live models as male students did. This meant that the female students had to primarily work with casts and then draw based on the casts. Her family played an important role in her studies in Paris, too. When she quit the University, Cassatt did not want to quit her studies. She wanted to move to Paris and in this she was aided by her family, as her mother acted as her chaperone here. Her family supported her in her want to study art directly from the masters in Paris. Now this was necessary because in Paris, women could not study in universities such as that of in the United States. Her family provided the needed support in her pursuing her education, even if they were against her pursuing a career in art.
