Now in the case of all isotopes, there is a certain amount of danger involves as these are radioactive. 13N has the risk of gaseous inhalation. 131I can cause a secondary hazard to happen and there are similar hazards as observed in the case of 18F and more (Slater, 2002). Now there are strict compliance procedures in place for handling these hazards and there are costs associated with this, too. Since almost all of them require compliant process and procedures to be followed, this hence could not be used as a factor for recommending discontinuation.
However, the waste management issue which is much increased is predominantly seen in the case of the demands for 99MO. With annual production of MO-99, the production of waste also increased. Accumulating waste production is a big concern in the industry. There can be different ways for using the HEU in the waste and yet manufacturers are not concerned with finding ways to recover them for reuse. The reason behind this could be because the purchase of fresh ones is much cheaper (Martin, 2006). Now this is an ethical issue seen at the production or manufacturing end. It can be said that in manufacturing, the ethical concerns of waste generation are not met. Wastes are being stored away for time being, but this cannot be a proper full term solution (Martin, 2006). Now although this has much internal and international demand, the facilities required for manufacturing and waste management would generate much costs, and hence it is recommended to the company that 99MO manufacturing be stopped in future.
