The most Pure Form of Love
The readers of Othello will perceive that the ideal form of love, which is pure and selfless, is that between Othello and Desdemona. There love can be seen on various occasions throughout the play. In the second scene of the play the General speaks to Lago by saying” I love the gentle Desdemona”. In the Act 1 scene iii of the play, Othello defends himself in front of council of Venice, shows the deep love and affection for is bride. He says:
“I do beseech you,
Send for the lady to the Sagittary,
And let her speak of me before her father:
If you do find me foul in her report,
The trust, the office I do hold of you,
Not only take away, but let your sentence
Even fall upon my life”. (Act1. Scene3)
Now the readers will see that Desdemona, when appeared in front of the council, shows her pure and altruistic love for her father as well as for her husband. She says:
“To you I am bound for life and education;
My life and education both do learn me
How to respect you; you are the lord of duty;
I am hitherto your daughter: but here’s my husband,
And so much duty as my mother show’d
To you, preferring you before her father,
So much I challenge that I may profess
Due to the Moor my lord.” (1.3)
