Mela & Heinisuo (2014) tries to explore the ways in which high strength steel in welded beams can be used. The major objective of this study is to evaluate the performance and make comparison of high strength steel of grades $500 and $700 to a pre-determined reference grade of $355. In order to explore the primary energy implications of three timber building systems in case of a multi-storey building that is designed to a high energy-efficiency level, the study of Dodoo et al, (2014) cannot be ignored. The three building systems those were included in the study involved cross laminated timber, modular pre-fabricated systems and beam and column ones.
Critique
The strength of this study is contribution that is made in the form of result that external and internal walls play important role in production of energy for almost all the building systems involved in sample. Significant variation is observed for the case of roof ceilings and floor ceilings across different building systems. Another important finding of the study is that life cycle primary energy balance is lowest for the case of cross laminated timber buildings. The reason hidden behind this finding is also explored by the study and states that this form of building is laminated with stone wool which improves air tightness as compared to those building systems that are insulated with glass which has lower performance in terms of air tightness. It is commonly perceived that wood based building materials contribute to reduce the costs associated with fuels but the findings of Dodoo et al, (2014) are opposite. It has been observed that wool based and glass based building materials serve the purpose better. However, the selection of building materials also depends on the requirements of particular region or locality in which it is located.
